The Full Story

About

Birmingham Jewish Community Care (BJCC) has existed in various guises since 1828.  Initially known as the Birmingham United Benevolent Society, then changing to Jewish Welfare Board. In the 19th Century most of its work was caring for newly arrived immigrants from Eastern Europe.  Initially the main focus was supporting people in need with money and food.

As the community grew after World War 1, there was an increasing need for facilities to care for the sick and the elderly.  This resulted with two homes being acquired (Tudor Lodge and Joy Silverstone House) over the years, but as the community grew and regulations changed, it was clear we needed to build a new home. Finally a purpose built care home, Andrew Cohen House, was built and opened in 1993.  We were very proud of our Home and it's excellent reputation.

In 2022 the very sad decision was made to sell Andrew Cohen House.  This difficult decision was made to ensure that BJCC could survive in the long term, enabling the charity to continue to support the community for years to come.

Birmingham Jewish Community Care is a registered Charity, operated by a management team who report to a Board of Trustees.
